How to maintain your skates…

If you’re new to the world of skates and need a little guide for keeping them in tip top shape – this is for you! It’s not exhaustive, but it’s the basics and it’s how we do it…

  • First of all, check your skates every time before you skate on them
  • And only use screws and bolts that are purpose made for your skates
  • Make sure you help your skate to dry out after you’ve been skating outside or after a particularly sweaty skate sesh! Don’t shove your skates by the radiator though – instead, wipe down your boots, inside and out, and then loosen the laces and let those boots dry naturally in the air.

And that’s it! Any questions for us, add ’em below and we’ll answer. Happy skating…

Two iconic names of skateboarding, Vans and Spitfire Wheels, have come together to unveil a smokin’ new collection this winter. Purpose-built for skaters, this fourth collab from the duo blends classic design with modern skate technology to provide performance footwear and must-have apparel.

The Vans x Spitfire pack features signature colourways of the UltraRange Pro and Slip-On Pro from Vans team riders John Cardiel and Daan Van Der Linden. It also includes the Style 112 Pro sporting the original Spitfire swirl. Each pair features UltraCush sockliners, Duracap-reinforced underlays and, of course, Vans’ original waffle outsoles for maximum comfort, durability and boardfeel.

On the apparel side of things you’ll find a Torrey fleece jacket, long and short sleeve tees and the white pullover hoody above – the iconic Spitfire ‘Flame Head’ logo, swirl print and checkerboard pattern are prominent throughout.

You can click through to our site HERE to view the full range but we couldn’t resist sharing a few studio shots of a handful of stand-out pairs on the blog.

Firstly, we are IN LOVE with the colourshift uppers of these Split Purple/Aqua Heelys. Just look what happens in the light: it’s sparkle magic overload…

These Split Pewter/Blue shoes have a similar splash of magic:

On to the Pow Lighted Black/Blue/Green Heelys which have a translucent rubber sole that lights up when you walk…

If it’s pink and glitter you’re into, these are the Heelys you need. The Plus Lighted Neon Pink/Light Pink/Silver shoe has a light-up logo on the side which is triggered by movement (like dancing or skipping or prancing or generally princessing about!)

And last but not least, how about these Uptown Navy/Lime Heelys? They’ve got uppers made from Super Mesh which looks like it’s magically changing colour as you move. We love them.

New Etnies kids shoes

Hey guys! Can we just talk for a minute about these really great new shoes for kids from the Etnies Fall ’17 collection?

The Jameson and the Scout are staples of the Etnies range but these brand new models, the Scout V and the Jameson 2 V, which have been scaled down for kids are winners for both the wearer…and their parents!

Firstly, both have a velcro strap and elastic laces for super easy access – they’re a breeze for kids to take off and on with no tricky laces to navigate.

The Scout boasts maximum breathability with a mesh-covered upper – so no more hot, sweaty feet! They also feel light as air, weighing barely anything and featuring trademark STI Evolution insoles for amazing levels of comfort.

Did we also mention the super trendy and very autumnal colourway? Those bright, almost neon orange laces are hard to miss. Kids will love them.

The Jameson features a die-cut EVA insole, a faux-vulc cupsole and a thinly padded tongue and collar…and if you’re struggling to understand that technical shoe speak, roughly translated it means they’re comfortable and durable – just what kids shoes should be.

Oh, and did we mention they’re both completely vegan-friendly?

How to grip a skateboard deck

It’s one of the things we get asked l o a d s so here it is – our guide to gripping your deck. It’s by no means a definitive guide, everyone has their slightly different methods, but this is how we do it.

You will need:

Step1: Peel back a few inches of the backing paper then centre the sheet on your deck leaving a bit of excess all the way around.

Step 2: Start to stick down the griptape, peeling off the backing as you go and pressing down to make sure there are no air bubbles.

Step 3: When you’ve pulled off the whole backing sheet, place it on top of the griptape (to protect your hands) and push out any stray air bubbles.

Step 4: You should have a nice overhang of griptape around the edges of your deck.

Step 5: Using the edge of a file or the metal part of a screwdriver, go round the edges of the deck at an angle. This not only gives you a white line that you can use as your guide when you’re cutting the grip, but it also makes the griptape weaker along that line so it should cut really easily.

Step 6: Now cut along the line you just made using a very sharp Stanley knife/box cutter or a razor blade. Try to make long, smooth cuts so your edges don’t end up looking choppy.

Step 7: When you’ve cut off all your excess griptape, grab a bit and use it like sandpaper to soften off those freshly cut edges.

Step 8: Use a screwdriver to poke holes through the grip from the side of the deck with the graphics. This is for your truck mounting hardware. Then flip over and poke the holes through from the grip side, getting rid of any excess grip.

Step 9: Attach your trucks and get your skate on!

We hope this helps!

Vansbuck Old Skool

Introducing this gem from the Vans Fall ’17 collection which has started to arrive at our warehouse – the Vans Old Skool Vansbuck in light gum/mono.

A classic Vans skate shoe, the Old Skool was the first to bare the iconic sidestripe when it debuted back in 1977. It features leather and synthetic uppers, re-enforced toecaps to withstand repeated wear, padded collars for support and Vans signature rubber waffle outsoles.

The light gum/mono colourway and tonal laces gives off that trendy work boot vibe.
